    1000 Journals Project July 28th, 2009

This book isn’t new, but it’s wonderful. It found it’s way into my pile of books to review, and I moved it to te top. A man sent 1000 journals into the world for us to work in, and waited for their return. The book is the resulf of his leap-of-faith experiment and it’s amazing. I worked in one of the journals, but didn’t make it into the book. :(

Anyway, it’s a great book, very inspiring, real, and honest. It’s what I’m reading this week.

    YouTube Trailer July 1st, 2008

This is a youtube Trailer for a new book on journaling.

She does an awesome job of promoting journaling and even tells a story about her boyfriend reading her journal that is hilarious.  Definitely sold her book to me!

A Very Unique Memoir–Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue July 27th, 2007

It’s called: The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star

Here’s a bit of the description from Amazon.

“In one of the most unique memoirs of addiction ever published, Mötley Crüe’s Nikki Sixx shares mesmerizing diary entries from the year he spiraled out of control in a haze of heroin and cocaine, presented alongside riveting commentary from people who were there at the time, and from Nikki himself.”

I love to read diaries and memoirs that have been published.  I might pick this up when it’s released.  I was not a big fan, but there “hay days” were my teen years.   Not sure if he chronicles drug rehab or not, but it does mention his decision to pick himself up and start living again.

    Not Really a Book Review……… July 18th, 2007

but a review of a great concept concerning books.  That counts, right?

I’m the type of person who can never remember to take books back to the library on time, same way with movies.  I love the movie services where you fill your que and they send the movie.  You send it back when you are done.  With BooksFree.com, you can do the very same thing with paperbacks and audiobooks.

I’ve been loading audio books on my laptop during naptime for the daycare kids lately so I can listen while I do paperwork so I thought I’d give this a try.  I love it!  The books ship quickly, are in perfect shape, and I can listen to as many as I can in a month, unlike other services where you buy each one, or get credit for a couple of books for a much more costly subscription price.  I can keep it as long or as little as I need, and as soon as I send it back, the next one is on the way.

They have a great selection.  And with dance and football season starting back up in another month, I can pop one in the cd player in the car while I’m waiting for the kids at their practices and get in some “reading” while I wait and get some of those books out of my “to read” list and into my reading journal where I write about what I’ve read.  Very, very nice indeed.  I started with the first Harry Potter so I could refresh my memory before the last book in the series comes out.  Wish I’d found this site sooner, because I would have listened to the whole series and would be ready for number seven.

On Creativity and Mental Illness/Addiction July 9th, 2007

I’ve already written here that I have an interest in psychology, especially the connections between artists/writers/creativity and mental illness or addiction.  This summer I’m re-enrolling on college to finish a psychology degree with a specialization in art and journal therapy.  I plan to research the addiction aspect as well.  Why is it so many highly intelligent, highly creative people in up in rehab or therapy for mental illness?

A reader here suggested the book “Witness to the Fire-Creativity and the Evil of Addiction” by Linda Schierse Leionard.  I got it off Amazon, and I’ll give a review when I finish reading it.

Burning Books to Save Them? June 25th, 2007

That’s exactly what a bookstore owner in Kansas City has been doing.  These two quotes a re on there website:

There are worse crimes than burning books, one is not reading them. ~ Joseph Brodskey
The individual who won’t read has nothing over the individual who cannot read. ~ Mark Twain

I’m not sure how I feel about this.  Burning books to save them?  I see book burnings as a way to protest people reading a certain book or type of books, not to encourage people to read them.

But mostly, the booklover in my cringes, cries, and is considering a road trip to Kansas City to get my hands on as many as I can before they burn any more.

For a dollar plus shipping they will send you one and not burn it.  For $20 plus shipping you can save a whole shelf of books.

All I can say is this, if you are willing to take a chance, and let someone else pick the books out for you at random, go for it.  I did.  3 shelves cost me around $7.00 for shipping.  It’s a book grab bag.  I’ll let you know how it turns out for me.  If you try it, let me know how it turned out for you.

    Journaling Books April 21st, 2007

There seems to be a barrage of books on journaling these days.  And to me, they all seem to repeat the same old information.  I don’t know if the authors and publishers aren’t doing their market research, or if there truly is a market for this many books covering the same ground, but I’d like to add a new feature to Creative Notebook to help you get past the “same ole” and find new information.

I’m going to feature book reviews on journaling, writing, and creativity.  If you’d like to write a review, contact me with your book idea at editor at creativenotebook dot com.  If you have a book you’d like to see reviewed, drop me a line and if I have it, I’ll review it for you!  Until next time……………………..keep writing.
