My main focus right now is a group on livejournal(that’s one of the things I like about it, you can form communities sort of like on yahoogroups) called embodiment. The purpose is to bring back the habit of keeping a paper journal. Let’s face it, paper journals were my first love, even as a little girl with my pink book with the heart-shaped lock. Technology makes it far easier on us to do it all on the keyboard. But in the end, when I’m 25 years gone and technology has changed over and over again, who will be able to access it? I may not want people reading it now, but when I’m long gone, it would be nice to think some historian might gain insight as to what life was like in our time by reading my journals.
It’s the same idea with pictures. Digital cameras outsell film ones, but how many of those pictures get printed? I print maybe 3% of the pictures I take. And I take a ton of them. over 2000 in the six months I’ve had my new camers. Can you imagine how many albums I could have filled? I’ve been digital for at least 6 years now. How will my grandchildren be able to dig through old albums and find pictures of their parents as kids? Or pictures of their great grandparents long gone? Will that legacy be left only for those who had family members that scrapbook or people who keep their media converted to the newest format like those who take the old reel film movies and have them put on dvd? That’s very expensive, by the way.
I’m sure this all comes from my standpoint as a genealogist. I love old pictures and family history. I even rescue other peoples old pictures, journals, and scrapbooks when I find them at flea markets, thrift stores, and auctions. So much history lost. I’ll let you all alone for now. Happy journaling!
