    J.K. Rowling’s Commencement Speech June 18th, 2008

This woman is my hero.  I just adore her and her work.  I wanted to share this link to her speech at the Harvard Alumni Association.  You can see the video or read the text.

_ul_flood5z.jpgThis is right across the highway from our homes.  I can’t seem to get it to work!!!http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/weather/2008/06/08/vosil.indiana.flooding.aerials.mxf.wthr

When you see the ace hardware in the video on cnn, that shopping center is across the street from my home and my mother’s home.  She’s disabled and mostly blind.

    37 between two rushing currents.

We were the first to know the water was rising, the first to be evacuated.  The Fire Department had to go in and get her.  It took four calls to 911 to get them here.  Our whole neighborhood is destroyed.  Our whole town is destroyed.  Our high school is full of families with no where else to go.

For a full day, we were completely cut off from the world, except for by air.  I’m not kidding.  The highway washed out on one end, flooded on the other.  Cars were stuck on one part of hwt 37 between two rushing currents. The marines and national guard flew in.  I can still hear helicopters above us.  I just really can’t describe it.

I sat at my dad’s house after the evacuation and watched the rain keep coming down.  I’ve been mostly in shock.  It’s been only 6 months since I lost my other home to fire.  Now this.  And my mom, too.

Tell people to donate to the red cross.  People need diapers and baby formula.  Clothes, food and shelter.  It’s like something out of a movie here.  Homeland Security and FEMA are everywhere. Walking through the town trying to keep homes and business’ secure.

I’m really not sure how much more I can take.  My son sick.  Fire.  Being diagnosed with rheaumatois arthritis in Feb.  This.  Feeling like the universe is out to do me in.
